It's a multi-sided problem set: hard state (discussed here), soft state (memory bound), physical infrastructure (network equipment), co-dependent services (think gmail + search) & multi-datacenter (BCP: business continuity planning). DHT is a solution. For soft state an abstraction layer that is a service broker is a safe bet. Network is another story.
